Bringing Home a New Horse
Everything we'd have ready before the trailer pulls in.
The week before a new horse arrives is busier than people expect. This is the short list of what we'd want sorted before the trailer backs in — not everything you'll ever need, just what actually matters on day one.
Before the trailer arrives
- A clean, deeply bedded stall or a safe, familiar turnout space
- Feed matched to what the horse was already eating, to transition slowly
- A halter and lead that actually fit
- Fresh water and a clean bucket, checked twice
The first 48 hours
- A quiet turnout schedule — let the horse settle before it socializes
- A plan for introductions to herdmates, done slowly and supervised
- Contact information for a local vet and farrier, saved before you need them
Worth having on hand
- A basic grooming kit
- A well-fitted fly mask or blanket, season depending
- A simple first-aid kit
